Makaira Saltwater spinning reel by Okuma new for 2016

“It’s about design, drive, drag and durability,” says Okuma’s Director of Product Development, John Bretza. “Makaira Spinning is built 100-percent from scratch. We took every component into consideration and built it from the ground up.”

Nearly ever part of the reel is made from forged aluminum. Forging compresses more material into the same space increasing strength.  It will be much stronger than die-cast aluminum, machine cut aluminum and long strand carbon..

Okuma also has a forged stainless steel main gear, resistant to saltwater, and able to develop 60 lbs of drag. A machine grade stainless pinion gear and spool shaft are able to withstand the pressures of heavy braided line. John Bretza says  “These are materials that nobody else is using,” says Bretza. “They’re strong. We’ve been testing it for close to two years, and the biggest fish we’ve caught on it is a 305-pound bluefin tuna.”

To bring in big fish Makaira has a dual force drag system with carbon drag washers. This gives the angler 60 possible drag levels, set with a silver dial on the drag knob. It works just line a lever drag.

To fight saltwater every reel goes through the Corrosion Resistant Coating process, coating the reel with Corrosion-X HD that penetrates and bonds to the metal. Then it gets a Hydroseal treatment, comprised of 23 oil retaining gaskets or O-rings.
